Family Travel in Queenstown with a 2-Year-Old

Travelling with a toddler doesn’t mean slowing down - it just means finding adventures they’ll love too. Our recent family trip to Queenstown, New Zealand, proved that it’s one of the best destinations for families with young children.

From snow-filled mornings to lakeside ice creams, Queenstown delivered the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and unforgettable memories.

Deer Park Heights: A Toddler’s Dream

One of the absolute highlights of our trip was visiting Deer Park Heights.

Armed with a bag of animal feed, our little legend spent hours meeting deer, Highland cows, alpacas, llamas, goats, donkeys and even Scottish Highland cattle—all with breathtaking views over Lake Wakatipu.

Being able to feed the animals up close made it one of the most memorable experiences of the trip, and the winding drive through the park was just as exciting.

Snow Kindy at Coronet Peak

One of the biggest reasons we chose Queenstown in winter was to hit the slopes.

While Mum and Dad enjoyed a morning snowboarding, our little legend spent the day at Snow Kindy at Coronet Peak.

The experienced educators kept the little ones entertained indoors while also introducing them to the snow through supervised outdoor play.

It meant everyone had the best day possible.

Parents could enjoy the mountain knowing their toddler was having just as much fun.

 

Parks… and More Parks

If there’s one thing every toddler appreciates, it’s a good playground.

Queenstown has fantastic parks scattered throughout town, and we quickly found ourselves stopping at one every day.

Whether it was climbing, swinging, running or making new friends, it became part of our daily routine—and a great way to burn off some toddler energy before lunch or dinner.

 

Lunch at Ayrburn

Travelling with kids doesn’t mean missing out on beautiful dining experiences.

Ayrburn quickly became one of our favourite spots.

The stunning gardens, relaxed atmosphere and open spaces made it incredibly family-friendly, while Mum and Dad enjoyed an amazing meal and a glass of local wine.

The venue has plenty of room for little legs to wander, making it far less stressful than your average restaurant visit.

Arthur’s Point Adventure

A short drive from Queenstown, Arthur’s Point is well worth adding to your itinerary.

The peaceful rivers, mountain scenery and quieter atmosphere offered a nice break from the busy town centre.

We spent time exploring, throwing rocks into the river, watching the water rush past and simply enjoying the slower pace.

Sometimes it’s these simple moments that become the best memories.

Saying Hello to the Ducks

Every morning seemed to include a stop along the lake to visit the local ducks.

For a two-year-old, this was just as exciting as any tourist attraction.

Watching them swim, waddle along the shoreline and quack back quickly became one of our favourite daily traditions.

It’s proof that toddlers often find the most joy in life’s simplest moments.

Lakeside Walks & Ice Creams

No trip to Queenstown is complete without wandering along the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

With spectacular mountain views in every direction, the lakeside paths are perfect for families with prams or toddlers wanting to explore.

Of course, every walk ended the same way—with a well-earned ice cream.

Watching the boats come and go while enjoying an ice cream beside the lake is one of those simple holiday moments we’ll remember forever.

Queenstown offers the perfect balance of adventure for adults and fun for little ones.

Whether you’re visiting during winter for the snow or warmer months for hiking and outdoor adventures, there’s no shortage of toddler-friendly activities.

Our biggest tip?

Don’t over-plan. Leave time for playground stops, duck watching, spontaneous ice creams and simply soaking up the incredible scenery together.
